Are you an aspiring storyteller?
Do you want to make video stories that change the world?

Then the Digital Storytellers Placement Program is for you!

The placement gives you the opportunity to work with a team of like-minded aspiring storytellers on pro-bono film projects, under the guidance of an inspiring team of socially conscious professionals, who together hold decades of experience in producing stories for impact.

If you’re successful, you could join our pool of freelancers and gain access to opportunities for future and ongoing paid work in producing stories.

Who are we looking for?

Anyone who passionately wants to use storytelling to make the world a better place!

Start your storytelling journey now. We can’t wait to see what you create!

Step 1 – Apply

Tell us about yourself! Submit a 60 second pitch reel that tells us:

  • What is your passion?
  • Why do you want to join us? (What stories do you want to tell?)
  • What skills do you have, and what skills do you feel you currently lack that you want to develop? (Experience shooting on DSLRs and using Adobe Premiere Pro is very helpful but not essential)
  • What gear do you have? (Smartphone video camera is a minimum requirement).
  • What is your time commitment? (How many days per week? Weekends only?)

Be creative in your video! We want to get a sense of your personality, as well as your current level of technical expertise.

Video applications close at 5pm on Sunday 24th July. You’ll be notified on success by close of business Monday 25th July if you are successful.

Step 2 – Intensive Workshop

If you’ve made it through to Stage 2 you’ll attend our Weekend Intensive Workshop on the 30th and 31st July. Here you will join our passionate team and other fellow storymakers, to learn our techniques for storycraft (using our unique Story Canvas process) and be brought up to speed on essential production and post-production techniques

Step 3 – Tell Us Your Story

Using what you’ve learned from the Intensive Workshop, we’ll ask you to reshoot your pitch video, or come up with a new story that you want to tell. Create a Story Canvas for it, go out and shoot it (2 mins max). Submit the video to us (along with the Story Canvas you created for it) by 5pm Monday 8 August.

From Tuesday 9th – Friday 12th August, depending on availability – we will give you feedback that you can take into your first pro-bono assignment.

Step 4 – Pro Bono Filmmaking

You will form a team with two other aspiring storytellers, and together work on two pro-bono projects – short videos for non-profit and social change organisations. In between you’ll touch base with our core crew for feedback, tips and guidance on how to improve your stories.
